The $900 billion COVID-19 relief package passed Monday provides $284 billion for a revised Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and clarifies that businesses can claim tax deductions for expenses paid for with forgiven PPP loans.

The Senate passed a House bill that gives small businesses and other entities that received loans from the Paycheck Protection Program 16 additional weeks to spend the funds and qualify for full forgiveness of the loans.

This is a hot topic right now for small businesses with payroll expenses for a program offered through the Small Business Administration.

The US Small Business Administration has released an interim final rule providing additional guidance and requirements for the program. The final rule includes a number of changes, including a doubling of the loans’ interest rate from 0.5% to 1%.

Relief for most!

The IRS announced the postponement of the April 15 federal income tax filing deadline until July 15. Friday’s notice expands on earlier guidance that had only postponed tax payments but not the filing deadline.

We'll still keep pumping them out until April 15! But at least there is some relief.

If you want to get your tax refund, you need to file your return. And if you owe taxes, you'll still have to pay them at some point.
