Why Your New York State Tax Filing is Temporarily Delayed?
1. Federal Law Changed Everything
Last year, the federal government passed the "One Big Beautiful Bill" (OBBB). This law changed massive parts of how we calculate taxes—especially for families, seniors, and people who work for tips or overtime.
2. The "SALT" Correction
In the past, you could only deduct $10,000 of your local taxes (the "SALT" cap). The new federal law increased that to $40,000. Because New Yorkers pay high property and state taxes, this is a huge win, but it means NYS had to completely rewrite the math on their tax forms to make sure you get the full benefit.
3. The "Inflation Refund" Glitch
Many New Yorkers received "Inflation Refund" checks from the state last year. Major tax software companies had to pause filing because their computers weren't calculating those checks correctly under the new federal rules. They are currently rolling out "patches" to fix this so your return doesn't get rejected.
4. No Tax on Tips and Overtime
The federal bill introduced new ways to avoid paying tax on tip income and certain overtime. NYS is currently finalizing its own rules to decide if they will match those federal savings. They cannot release the final forms until these "last-minute" rules are set in stone.
