Don't Fall for Fake IRS Scams

Just wanted to remind you the IRS will NEVER contact you through email or phone.

If they question your return it will be a letter which you would immediately forward to me as your tax preparer for review.

IRS impersonation scams take many forms: threatening telephone calls, phishing emails and demanding letters.

IRS Warns Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia Residents of New Phishing Scam Targeting National Capital Area

As reports of phone scams as well as email phishing schemes continue across the country, the Internal Revenue Service warned taxpayers of a new phishing scam targeting Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia residents.

This time, the email scammers are citing tax fraud and trying to trick victims into verifying “the last four digits of their social security number” by clicking on a link provided. The criminals specifically state that this is for tax filers in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. As a further attempt to trick residents of the Capital region, the email scam even suggests that information from recent data breaches across the nation may be involved.

IRS Scam Alert -

The IRS will never:
•Call to demand immediate payment over the phone, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you several bills.
•Call or email you to verify your identity by asking for personal and financial information.
•Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.
•Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.
•Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone or email.
•Threaten to immediately bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.

If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS and asking for money or to verify your identity, here’s what you should do:

If you don’t owe taxes, or have no reason to think that you do:
•Do not give out any information. Hang up immediately.
•Contact TIGTA to report the call. Use their “IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting” web page. You can also call 800-366-4484.
•Report it to the Federal Trade Commission. Use the “FTC Complaint Assistant” on FTC.gov. Please add “IRS Telephone Scam” in the notes.

The Internal Revenue Service warned taxpayers to watch out for fake emails or websites looking to steal personal information. These “phishing” schemes continue to be on the annual IRS list of “Dirty Dozen” tax scams for the 2016 filing season.

Phone Scams Continue to be a Serious Threat - FYI - The IRS NEVER contacts a taxpayer by phone to demand money, threaten a lawsuit, etc. "Don't be fooled by callers pretending to be from the IRS in an attempt to steal your money," said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen.
