The Arizona State Tax Credit program allows you to make a donation to an eligible organization and receive a dollar-for-dollar credit against Arizona state taxes owed. It’s a nice way to take a chunk of your tax dollars and direct them to causes that are important to you. Please remember - before you send any organization any money, make sure they qualify for the credit that you are considering.
Contact us at 480-837-6083 if you have questions or if you'd like a list of qualifying organizations.

Now that he election is over. we are watching to see if congress will make changes to the expiring tax law provisions. With 55 days left, lets hope that congress see the wisdom and passes some tax help.

My biggest fear is that without Congress acting many people will get hurt by new taxes. My guess is that the middle class will feel the pinch. What do you think? Let me know

Recently I attended a class on IRS MATTERS. This lecture was taught by Gary Sterbis. Gary is former IRS agent and now work in tax matters for a firm named Moss Adams. His class was a great lesson in how to handle cases and work with the IRS agents. I learned a lot and will happy to share these ideas with anybody who has a tax issue with an agent or the IRS.

During the class we learned which questions to ask of the agents.I
recommend any CPA's take his class if possible.

The IRS has recently announced a new program for it taxpayers who have college bounds students. The IRS has set up a new program called Data Retrieval Tool. This program will help the students and their parents by taking the information need for the college FAFSA form directly from the taxpayers filed income tax returns.

This program will save parents of college bound students lots of time and money. Anyone interested in more information on this program can give me a call or look at the IRS website.

Considerable debate has been flying around about the new 3.8% tax that goes into effect for 2013. What the rumor says is that the new tax will apply to the entire sale of the taxpayers home..

After carefully looking into the rumors it is clear that the new law will affect a small number of taxpayers. Numerous exclusions and exceptions apply to this law. If a taxpayer is not sure about how the law will effect them they can sit down a tax planner and determine how this new law law will effect them.

What happens when a taxpayer does have sufficient substantiation
for their expenses? Under Code section 280 E, the taxpayer must maintain sufficient reliable records. A strict set of rules exist for what is sufficient records. The records must be detailed. Each part of the records must relate to the taxpayers claims for income and or deductions.

If it turns out that the taxpayer lacks the detail the IRS will deny
the deduction. The court cases generally support the IRS in this area of the law.

For more information on what is proper documentation, call my office.

Speaking of changes in the tax law that many people have not noticed is the change in dividends that will be taking place as of January 1, 2013. Assuming that Congress lets the Bush tax cuts expire, the taxpayers will feel the tax pinch when they see their dividends suddenly taxed at their ordinary rates. right now taxpayers who have dividends see their dividends qualified and they get a break so that the dividends are taxed at a low low rate.

If Congress doesn't act then the bottom line is that all taxpayers will be paying more taxes. This change will have a profound impact on many seniors. Many taxpayers rely on those dividends
to pay their bills. Making people pay more taxes is something that will not be tolerated and the it will not help the country's leaders work together.

Congress should not let this happen to its citizens. I truly believe that Congress at the last moment will stop this change from hurting its taxpayers.
