💗💚💛 T LOVE TAX TIP: KNOW YOUR 5 IRS TAX FILING STATUSES! 💰📚
2027 TAX SEASON EDUCATION | TAX YEAR 2026
Did you know choosing the wrong filing status could affect your tax refund, deductions, credits, or how much you owe the IRS?
Before filing your taxes, understand these 5 IRS filing statuses and when to use them!
1️⃣ SINGLE (S)
✅ You’re unmarried as of December 31, 2026.
✅ You’re divorced or legally separated under a qualifying court decree.
✅ You don’t qualify for another filing status, such as Head of Household.
💡 Example: You’re unmarried, have no qualifying dependents, and support yourself.
2️⃣ MARRIED FILING JOINTLY (MFJ)
✅ You’re legally married as of December 31, 2026.
✅ You and your spouse agree to combine income, deductions, and credits on one tax return.
✅ You may qualify even if only one spouse earned income.
💡 Tax Tip: Filing jointly often provides more favorable tax benefits, but both spouses are generally responsible for the joint return.
3️⃣ MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY (MFS)
✅ You’re legally married but choose to file individual tax returns.
✅ You and your spouse want to report taxes separately.
✅ Filing separately may make sense depending on your financial circumstances.
⚠️ Important: Filing separately can limit certain tax credits and deductions. Compare your options before filing!
4️⃣ HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD (HOH)
✅ You’re unmarried or considered unmarried under IRS rules.
✅ You paid more than half the cost of maintaining your home.
✅ You have a qualifying child or other qualifying person who meets IRS requirements.
💡 Example: You’re a single parent, your qualifying child lives with you, and you pay more than half the household expenses.
🚨 Remember: Having children does NOT automatically qualify you for Head of Household!
5️⃣ QUALIFYING SURVIVING SPOUSE (QSS)
✅ Your spouse passed away in 2024 or 2025.
✅ You haven’t remarried by December 31, 2026.
✅ You have a qualifying dependent child and meet the household support and other IRS requirements.
💡 Tax Tip: This status may allow eligible surviving spouses to use the same standard deduction and tax rates as Married Filing Jointly for up to two years after the year their spouse died.
