What happens when a physical therapist builds a 50-location national franchise without growth goals, without traditional marketing, and without sacrificing culture?

In this episode of Behind the Numbers, we sit down with Zach Long to talk about leadership, scaling a healthcare business, building niche expertise, and why paying your team top dollar from day one might actually create better retention and better outcomes.

Zach shares how he went from the CrossFit world into co-founding a rapidly growing out-of-network physical therapy franchise, why specialization matters in healthcare, and how their clinics continue to grow almost entirely through relationships and word-of-mouth referrals.

Writing off your car, your meals, your travel? Totally normal. Do it.
Hiding personal expenses inside your business supply line? That's where it gets messy.

I talk to business owners all the time who are co-mingling funds -- running personal purchases through the business, keeping profit low to reduce the tax bill. And I get it. That impulse makes sense in the moment.

But here's what it costs you when you're ready to sell: everything.

Valuations are based on profit. If your books don't show it, buyers won't pay for it. And cleaning it up last minute isn't as simple as it sounds -- inconsistent records, numbers that don't match year to year, funds that can't be explained -- all of it raises red flags that kill deals or drop your price.

The fix isn't complicated. It's just consistent. Clean books, every month, for years before you're ready to sell.

That's exactly what we help you build.

Launching with three episodes felt like the right way to start this journey, and I am really proud of these conversations. I think you are going to find them useful whether you are just getting started or years into building your business.

Listen to an episode (or all three). Share the podcast with one person in your world who would find it useful. And if you enjoy the show, please like and subscribe. It genuinely helps more people find the show.

This has been a long time coming.

On May 21st, we launch.

Three episodes of Behind the Numbers drop on YouTube at once, and I honestly can’t wait for you to hear them.

Here’s a little taste of who you’ll be meeting:

Mike Collins has been sugar-free for 37 years and said something early in our conversation I keep coming back to: attention is the most valuable commodity on earth. Not money. Attention.

Camille Freeman is a nutritionist who mentors other practitioners and put it simply: most of them are pricing based on vibes.

Brad Kearns has written 22 books and co-authored a New York Times bestseller. When I asked what’s working well in his daily operations, his first answer was that focus is hard.

Three very different people. Three conversations worth having.

See you on Thursday!

Here’s something I think about a lot.

Most people in health and wellness got into this work because they wanted to help people. The business part was kind of an afterthought.

And then reality hits. You need clients. You need to price your services. You need to figure out payroll and cash flow and whether you’re actually making money or just staying busy. Nobody taught you any of that.

That gap is exactly why I started Behind the Numbers. Real conversations with real wellness business owners about what’s going on behind the scenes.

We launch on YouTube May 21st. Three episodes dropping at once. Come find us.

One of the themes I didn’t expect going into this series was how often the word sustainability came up.

Not sustainability as a buzzword. Sustainability as the actual goal.

Business owners who are done chasing the next big launch. Practitioners who want to stop being the only thing holding their business together. Coaches who are realizing that growing faster isn’t the same as growing better.

Episode after episode, the conversation kept coming back to the same place: what does it look like to build something that actually lasts?

That’s what Behind the Numbers is about. We launch on YouTube May 21st with three episodes dropping at once.

I’ve been asking every guest one question that always leads somewhere unexpected.

What’s actually going on in your business right now?
Not the highlight reel version. The real one.

Here's something I never thought about before talking to a business broker.

If you ever want to sell your business, start talking about it now. Years before you plan to do it.

Not publicly, not dramatically -- just quietly, in authentic moments, with the people in your community who you think would be the best fit to take it over.

Something like: "I'm thinking about my next chapter. I'll probably explore a sale in the next couple of years. If you're ever interested, I think you'd be perfect for this."

That's it. Then walk away.

What you're doing is planting a seed. Giving someone time to fall out of love with their corporate job. Time to figure out financing. Time to wrap their brain around becoming an entrepreneur.

Mitch told me something like 50% of buyers come from within the community -- a teacher, a client, a service provider. Someone who already trusts you and loves what you've built.

You don't have to announce anything. You just have to normalize the idea. Quietly, intentionally, early.

April is the time of year when a lot of business owners start thinking about the rest of the year.

Q2 is underway. Tax season just wrapped for most people. Summer is closer than it feels.

It's a genuinely good time to ask: is my business set up to take care of me through the rest of 2026?

Not just revenue-wise. I mean: do you have a system that makes sure profit is set aside before expenses run away with it? Do you know what your slow months look like and have you planned for them? Are you paying yourself consistently, or whenever it "feels okay"?

You don't need a major overhaul. You need a clear picture and a next step.
If you want help getting that picture, my DMs are open.

One day away and I just want to say — this one feels different to me.

I’ve been doing workshops for a while. But I’ve never put the nervous system piece, the Profit First framework, and the real talk about what support looks like all in one room before.

If you’ve been on the fence: come. It’s free, it’s 45 minutes, and you’ll leave with something in your hand — not just notes.

April 28.
