Hi [Client Name],
Tax season doesn’t start in January—it starts now.
What you do over the next few months determines whether next year’s tax filing is smooth… or stressful.
Here’s exactly what you need to handle before the end of this year to stay compliant, protected, and prepared.
First, verify your identity and government records.
Make sure your driver’s license or state ID is current, accurate, and not expired. The IRS, banks, and tax software all require valid identification. Outdated IDs delay refunds and create unnecessary verification issues.
Next, create or log into your ID.me account.
ID.me is how the IRS verifies who you are. If you don’t already have an account, create one now. If you do, log in and make sure your information is correct. Waiting until tax season is a rookie mistake.
Then, log into SSA.gov.
If you’re self-employed, this is critical. Review your earnings record and confirm your self-employment income is being reported accurately. This directly affects your future retirement benefits. If the income isn’t showing, that’s a problem we need to address early—not at retirement age.
Now, handle your 1099 responsibilities.
If you paid contractors, vendors, or service providers:
• Get W-9s completed now
• Confirm legal names, emails, and mailing addresses
• Make sure you know exactly who needs a 1099
Chasing people in January is chaos. We don’t do chaos.
Also, budget for your 2026 tax preparation and bookkeeping services.
Quality tax work isn’t an impulse buy—it’s a business expense. Plan for it. Budget for it. Pretending it’ll “work itself out” is how people end up cutting corners that cost them more later.
You also need to schedule your Q1 tax strategy appointment.
We’ll review how the OBBB impacts you and your household specifically. Not headlines. Not social media opinions. Real numbers, real planning, real strategy.
Finally—let’s talk about DIY tax software.
Using DFY or self-file software doesn’t magically give you the same tax law knowledge I have. Paying less for prep fees can cost you thousands in missed deductions, compliance issues, and bad decisions. Cheap filing is often the most expensive choice.
Preparation is power.
And power saves money.
If you need help completing any of the steps above or want to get on the schedule early, reach out now. Future-you will be grateful you did.
