Have a son, daughter, or friend filing taxes on their own for the first time? 🎓 Tag them or share this post.
Here's what we tell every first-time filer:
• Keep every form that arrives: W-2s, 1099s, anything with your name on it
• Never ignore a 1099. The IRS gets a copy too.
• If you can't pay in full, still file. Filing late costs far more than paying late.
• A big refund means you overpaid all year, so adjust your W-4.
• Side income from freelancing, resale, or gig work is taxable.
• Save a copy of your return. Loans, apartments, and financial aid will ask for it.
