IRS letters can be triggered when something on a tax return looks unusual or inconsistent.
For example, if someone earns $100,000 and suddenly reports a $50,000 charitable donation, that may stand out, especially if they have no history of similar donations.
The IRS uses systems that can flag unusual items for review. Sometimes that may lead to a notice or audit letter.
This does not always mean something is wrong, but it does mean your records need to support what was filed.
