The Internal Revenue Service announced Monday, January 26, 2026, as the opening of the nation’s 2026 filing season. This year, several new tax law provisions of the One, Big, Beautiful Bill become effective, which could impact federal taxes, credits and deductions.
Taxpayers have until Wednesday, April 15, 2026, to file their 2025 tax returns and pay any tax due. The IRS expects to receive about 164 million individual income tax returns this year, with most taxpayers filing electronically.

Tax Season!!
As we prepare for this year, I have some updated information from the IRS regarding tax year 2025.
The official opening date for the IRS to begin accepting and processing 2025 tax returns (during the 2026 tax season) has not yet been officially announced. However, based on historical patterns, the filing season is expected to open in late January 2026, likely around January 26–30.
Key Dates and Information
Expected Opening Date: The IRS typically opens the e-filing season in the last week of January. Industry experts speculate the date could be Monday, January 26, 2026, or possibly later, around February 2, due to new tax laws.
Official Tax Day: The deadline to file your federal income tax return for the 2025 tax year is Wednesday, April 15, 2026.
Employer Forms Deadline: Employers must furnish W-2 forms and most 1099 forms to employees and the IRS by January 31, 2026. You can start preparing your tax returns as soon as you have all your necessary documents.
Refund Timeline: For most taxpayers who file electronically and use direct deposit, the IRS issues refunds in less than 21 days.
EITC/ACTC Refunds: By law, refunds for returns claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) are held until mid-February, with the earliest refunds typically available by March 3, 2026.
