If you rent out your primary residence or vacation home for no more than 14 days, you don’t have to report the income. (But you can’t deduct related expenses, such as advertising and cleaning.) If you rent it out for more than 14 days, the income is taxable. And you may be able to deduct expenses such as utilities, repairs, insurance and depreciation. Exactly what you can deduct depends on personal vs. rental use. The rules are complex, but tax savings opportunities are available. Call us at (866) - 88 TAXPRO to learn more.

The IRS has issued final regulations on the tax deduction for qualified cash tips. The legislation commonly known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” created the deduction of up to $25,000 per year for 2025 through 2028. Qualified tips generally refer to cash tips received by an individual in an occupation that “customarily and regularly” received tips on or before Dec. 31, 2024. The final regs list more than 70 eligible occupations. In addition to occupations previously listed in the proposed regs, the final regs add visual artists, floral designers and gas pump attendants. The final regs also provide clarifications to the definition of a qualified cash tip. For more details, call us at (866) - 88 TAXPRO.

Do your employees pay out of pocket for business travel, meals or supplies? With a properly structured “accountable plan,” reimbursements are tax-free to employees and deductible for your business. (Remember, meals are generally only 50% deductible.) Without an accountable plan, reimbursements count as taxable wages and trigger income taxes for the employee and payroll taxes for both the employee and your business. Contact us at (866) - 88 TAXPRO to help ensure your reimbursement practices comply with the tax rules and minimize unintended tax consequences.

A summer job is a great way for teens to earn extra cash, but it also comes with tax responsibilities. Anyone with self-employed income over $400, such as earnings from mowing lawns or babysitting, must file an income tax return and may owe self-employment tax. If a teen works for an employer that withholds payroll taxes, the filing threshold is higher: $16,100 for 2026. In this case, the teen usually won’t owe income tax and may receive a refund if taxes were withheld. Call us at (866) - 88 TAXPRO with questions.

The stepped-up basis rules can reduce capital gains tax for family members who inherit your assets. Under these rules, when your loved one inherits an asset, its tax basis is “stepped up” to its fair market value at the time of your death. If the heir later sells the asset, he or she will owe capital gains tax only on any appreciation after your date of death, rather than on the entire gain since you acquired it. Investment accounts, business interests, real estate and personal property are among the assets affected by the stepped-up basis rules. Call us at (866) - 88 TAXPRO for details.

If you own foreign assets and fail to properly address them in your estate plan, unexpected tax outcomes can result. For example, if you’re a U.S. citizen, your worldwide assets are potentially subject to federal gift and estate taxes, regardless of where you live or where the assets are located. So, if you own assets in other countries and the assets are subject to estate, inheritance or other death taxes in those countries, there’s a risk of double taxation. Call us at (866) - 88 TAXPRO to learn more about how to properly account for foreign assets in your estate plan.

If the IRS audits your income tax return, you may need to produce documentation. In general, the IRS has three years to assess additional tax, starting from the date the return was filed or due, whichever is later. For example, if you filed your 2022 return by the April 18 deadline in 2023, the IRS generally has until April 18, 2026, to assess a tax deficiency. So you potentially can discard records related to that return after April 2026. But records should be held longer in certain situations. And you should keep copies of your returns forever. Boat owners may qualify for federal income tax breaks — but only if the boat meets specific requirements. For example, a vessel with sleeping, cooking and toilet facilities could qualify as a home for the mortgage interest itemized deduction. Itemizers may also be able to deduct eligible state and local sales tax paid on a boat, subject to applicable limits. Vessels used in bona fide businesses, such as charter fishing or sightseeing, can generate deductible business expenses. Before assuming your boat delivers tax savings, contact us at (866) - 88 TAXPRO to learn more. We can help determine your vessel’s eligibility and provide guidance on substantiating any write-offs.
