Tax Notice Requesting Identity Confirmation? Don't Panic.

The IRS and state have been sending out a lot of notices to people receiving refunds, requesting they send in additional information or go online and answer questions to confirm their identity. This is due to the amount of fraudulent returns that have been filed in recent years. So, don't panic, follow the instructions on the notice as soon as you can to get your refund processed.

Here is some information on the IRS' Offer In Compromise program. There are a lot of companies offering to help taxpayers eliminate their tax debt but there is a certain procedure the IRS must follow in order to do this and a taxpayer must meet certain qualifications. It is not as easy or random as these companies make it sound in their ads. Here is a short IRS publication that outlines their OIC criteria in the first couple pages. Before you pay someone to settle your tax debt for pennies on the dollar be sure to read this:
