Save yourself time and money by being ready with all of your tax documents! Collect all of the tax information that comes in the mail in January in one place, such as W-2's, 1099's, and mortgage interest statements. Be careful to not throw them away, even if they don't look very significant.
The following list includes, but is not limited to, common pieces of information necessary to prepare your tax return:
► Full name, social security number, and birth date of a new baby or new dependent on your tax return
► Your bank routing number and account number, if you want to have any refunds you are entitled to directly deposited
► 1099-SA for Social Security income
► Gains & losses for sales of securities or other assets such as real estate
► K-1's from any pass-thru entities such as a partnership or S-corporation
► IRA contribution amounts
► HSA contribution amounts
► Form 1098-T for post-secondary education expenses for students
► Income and expense records for any rental properties or self-employed activity
► Unemployment income
► Alimony income
► Real estate property taxes paid - no matter your income tax situation, any individual who paid Nebraska property taxes in 2023 and files a Nebraska tax return is eligible for the Nebraska Property Tax Credit
► Childcare expenses
► Estimated tax payments made
► Market Place Exchange Health Insurance form 1095-A (we no longer need Forms 1095-B or 1095-C)
► Out-of-pocket health insurance and long-term care insurance paid if you are self-employed
► If you itemize your deductions (many people do not), you need to provide records of expenses such as out-of-pocket medical expenses, long-term care insurance costs, taxes paid with your vehicle registration, and cash and non-cash charitable donations
