Higher IRS Mileage Rates Take Effect
Due to rising fuel costs, the IRS has increased the 2026 cents-per-mile rates for calculating certain vehicle deductions. Effective July 1, 2026, the standard mileage rate for the business use of a car, SUV, van, pickup truck or panel truck is 76 cents per mile, up from 72.5 cents per mile for the first half of the year.

The revised rate for medical and eligible moving purposes is 23.5 cents per mile, up from 20.5 cents per mile. For charitable driving, the 14 cents per mile rate remains unchanged.

These rates apply to gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles as well as electric and hybrid ones. To protect your deduction, keep detailed mileage records. Contact the office with questions.

Single? You Still Need an Estate Plan
If you’re single with no children, an estate plan can help ensure your wishes will be carried out and important decisions remain in trusted hands.

Without a will, state intestacy laws generally determine who inherits assets. While beneficiary designations may control certain accounts, assets without beneficiary designations or joint ownership typically pass according to state law. For singles with no children, state law may call for assets to be distributed to relatives such as parents, siblings, aunts and uncles, or cousins. If no relatives can be located, assets may pass to the state.

For wealthier singles, there are also estate tax considerations. Singles with significant assets should consider estate planning techniques such as trusts to help minimize taxes.

Additionally, powers of attorney can allow someone you trust to handle financial matters and make medical decisions on your behalf if you become incapacitated.

As summer winds down, now is the perfect time to shift your focus from tax deadlines to long-term planning.

This month’s newsletter highlights strategies to help individuals, families, and business owners make informed financial decisions before year-end.

For Individuals:
Thoughtful estate and wealth transfer planning can help protect your legacy while minimizing potential tax consequences. We discuss gifting strategies, trusts, beneficiary designations, and the importance of coordinating your estate and tax plans to ensure they reflect your long-term goals.

For Business Owners:
If business succession is on your horizon—whether next year or years from now—planning ahead is essential. We cover preparing your financial records, evaluating internal and external transition options, and understanding the tax implications that can impact the value of your business and your future.

We also encourage a mid-year tax check-in to review:
• Estimated tax payments and withholding
• Retirement contribution opportunities
• Business expenses and documentation
• Major purchases and tax planning strategies

And remember—good recordkeeping throughout the year makes tax planning easier, supports valuable deductions, and helps you make better financial decisions.

At Aiken Warner PLLC, CPAs, we believe the best financial outcomes come from proactive planning. Whether you're building generational wealth, preparing for a business transition, or looking ahead to year-end tax strategies, we're here to help you plan with confidence.

⚠️ Scam Alert: Watch Out for Fake DocuSign Emails

Cybercriminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and fake DocuSign emails are one of the latest tactics being used to trick people into sharing personal or financial information.

Keep in mind that even if an email appears to come through DocuSign, it doesn't automatically mean the request is legitimate. Scammers can use real DocuSign accounts to send fraudulent invoices, contracts, or payment requests.

Before opening or signing any document:
✔️ Ask yourself if you were expecting it.
✔️ Verify the sender's identity—not just the DocuSign logo or display name.
✔️ Contact the sender using a trusted phone number or email address you already have.
✔️ Instead of clicking links in the email, visit DocuSign directly and use the security code provided in the message to locate the document.

Be especially cautious if the email creates a sense of urgency, claims you owe money for an unfamiliar purchase, or instructs you to call a phone number immediately.

When it comes to suspicious emails, it's always better to pause and verify before taking action. A few extra minutes could help protect your personal information and prevent fraud.

Several important tax developments are on the radar for taxpayers and business owners.

Among the recent updates:
• The IRS increased the standard business mileage rate to 76¢ per mile for eligible business travel beginning July 1, 2026. A separate rate applies to miles driven before July 1, so accurate mileage records are more important than ever.
• The IRS continues implementing recent tax law changes, with additional guidance and regulations expected in the months ahead.
• New tax proposals and policy discussions continue to emerge, reinforcing the importance of proactive planning rather than waiting until tax season.

As tax laws evolve, staying informed can help you avoid costly mistakes and take advantage of available opportunities.

If you have questions about mileage deductions, recent tax changes, or how new IRS guidance may affect your business or personal tax situation, contact Aiken Warner PLLC, CPAs at 703-591-1040.

The ultimate success of a business often comes back to decisions made at its inception. If you’re planning to start a business, one key decision is choosing its structure, commonly sole proprietorship, C corporation, S corporation, partnership or limited liability company. In addition to owner liability variations, all have different tax requirements that can affect everything from hiring to cash flow to owner income. Another critical decision is choosing a tax year — either a calendar year or a fiscal year (12 consecutive months ending on the last day of any month except December). Call us at 703-591-1040. We can help you make the best decisions for your current situation and your business’s future.

As a business owner, it's easy to stay focused on the day-to-day operations—but overlooking early financial warning signs can lead to bigger challenges down the road.

Signs such as increasing employee turnover, ongoing cash flow issues, rising operating costs, slower customer payments, or unexpected market changes may indicate that it's time to take a closer look at your company's financial health.

The good news? Identifying potential problems early gives you the opportunity to make informed decisions before small issues become costly ones.

Regular financial reviews, interim reporting, and targeted accounting procedures can provide valuable insight into your business's performance, helping you strengthen cash flow, improve profitability, and plan with confidence.

Don't wait until year-end to understand where your business stands.

At Aiken Warner PLLC, CPAs, we can help you monitor your financial health, identify areas of concern, and develop strategies to keep your business on track.

💍 Congratulations to all the newlyweds!

Marriage is an exciting new chapter—but it also brings a few important tax and financial changes that shouldn't be overlooked.

If you got married recently, your first tax return as a married couple may affect your tax withholding, filing status, and overall tax strategy. It's a good idea to:
• Review your paycheck withholding and update your Form W-4 if needed
• Notify the Social Security Administration if you've changed your name
• Update financial accounts, insurance policies, and beneficiary designations
• Review your estate plan and long-term financial goals together

Taking care of these items now can help prevent surprises at tax time and ensure you're making the most of the tax benefits available to married couples.

Starting your new life together is the perfect time to make sure your financial plan is working just as hard as you are.

Have questions about how marriage affects your taxes? Contact Aiken Warner PLLC, CPAs at 703-591-1040. We're here to help you start this next chapter with confidence.

If your C corporation traditionally makes deductible charitable gifts, make sure you know the rules for 2026 donations. Starting Jan. 1, 2026, corporations can only deduct charitable gifts in excess of 1% of the company’s taxable income, with a 10% of income cap. Amounts exceeding the 10% cap can be carried forward — as can amounts that aren’t currently deductible due to the 1% floor — for up to five years. You may want to execute a multiyear charitable deduction strategy if your company’s income varies from year to year.

Contact us at 703-591-1040. We can help by projecting income and other deductions so you can support your community while maximizing long-term tax benefits.
