Pondered a delayed start due to ice, but erred on opening two hours early today because that’s how we roll on deadline day. #1099

First installment of Indiana property tax due TODAY, May 10th!!!!

So many great reasons to be a Hoosier! One is our fiscally responsible state government. As Indiana has a budget surplus, they return the overage to the taxpayer via the 'use of excess reserves' law. So...most taxpayers will receive an Automatic Taxpayer Refund if they filed an Indiana resident tax return for the 2020 tax year with postmark date of Jan. 3, 2022, or earlier. It's a flat $125 per person (i.e., married couples will receive $250). These payments will be made via direct deposit or check from May through Fall of 2022. Enjoy the bonus refund!

Love the Masters. But golf scorecards are like a tax return...you have to keep your own score, perfectly tabulate it.......but if you sign an incorrect card; you're wrong and they'll assess penalties/disqualification. And you can't ask them what the right answer is ahead of time. Make sure you have a good caddy...

April Fools Day is always the most difficult day of the year in the tax office.
"You owe this year."
"No seriously, you really do."
"I promise that you do."
"Just take this payment voucher and call us tomorrow..."

If providing cow cuddling as therapy to clients who owe the IRS is wrong, then we don’t wanna be right .

*** Regarding upcoming child tax credits ***

The old rules up to 12/31/2020 allowed for a child tax credit of $2,000 for each claimed child under 17 and $500 for each claimed child over 16.

For year 2021 if your adjusted gross income is under $150,000 married or $75,000 single they are modifying this to be a child tax credit of:
• $500 for each child over 17 or
• $3000 for each child under 18 but over 6 or
• $3600 for children under 7

They are going to advance this credit by sending you a small portion each month starting in July. The advance isn’t giving you more money, but simply allowing you to get it sooner and then your refund will be reduced by this amount when we file. The IRS is creating 2 new portals on their website which should be ready by the end of June. One will allow you to update direct deposit, address, etc. The 2nd one will allow you to OPT OUT of getting the advance money. So, you have to actively do this to prevent getting these advance payments.

Each scenario is unique, but we’re recommending most to OPT OUT, as receiving refunds early will alter or lower your refund or cause you to owe more when we file. ALSO: if you qualify now based upon the 2020 tax return, but you do NOT on the 2021 tax return, you will have to pay these funds back.

There’s simply far too much downside for the very small upside, and jumping into a brand new roll out with the IRS is never usually worth it for the time spent in getting mistakes corrected. Let us know of specific questions, but by July 1, there should be a portal on the IRS site that allows you to quickly OPT OUT. We’ll see how things go, provide guidance, and continue to answer questions as helpful.
