Have you ever heard someone say that taking the home office deduction increases your audit risk?!

Yeah, that's just an old myth! 🙃

The thing you reallllly need to be careful about if you're a business owner who primarily works from home is that your home office space should be used regularly + exclusively for your business.

A kitchen table where you set up your laptop from 9 to 3, then host Taco Tuesday at 7? 🌮

That's exactly where the IRS starts to have an issue!

Home offices aren't an automatic red flag, but if you want to deduct yours, you generally need to keep personal use out of it.

Not getting the contractor's W-9 and not setting up your bookkeeping software to track payments by contractor.

This combo means you're signing yourself up for a ~not-very-fun~ January when 1099s are due...

So please, save this post and refer back to it before you hire your next contractor. 🙏

Kidding, doing your own bookkeeping isn't thaaat bad... as long as you know what you're doing (and follow my advice on the next slides 🤭).

In my opinion, the best DIY bookkeeping set-up doesn't mean you have to have the most expensive software or have everything automated.

The best system is the one you'll stick with even when you're swamped. 😅

The entrepreneur in me is addicted to the feeling of getting a fresh set of brand photos back, watching a website refresh go live, and seeing the Four Pillars brand come together. 🤭

Marketing can be both a legitimate business expense and one of the most exciting investments you make in your business—just remember to save those invoices and receipts!

Stop scrolling and make sure you have your own copies of these things saved right now ↓

→ Bank, credit card + loan statements

→ Receipts + vendor invoices

→ Sales reports from your payment processor (Stripe, Etsy, Square, etc.)

→ Payroll reports (deposit confirmations, filings, W-2s/W-3)

→ Tax records (filings, estimated tax payments, IRS or state notices)

→ Bookkeeping records (monthly financial statements, reconciliation reports, year-end financials)

→ Business formation documents (LLC/organization documents, business licenses, EIN letter, state/local registrations, etc.)

These documents shouldn't exclusively live in your iPhone files or a local folder on your laptop; make sure you're saving them to a location that isn't device-dependent! 🖥️
