Elena of The Good Philanthropist led a fantastic panel discussion today on how non-profit leaders can place financial sustainability front & center with their boards.

Aimee Butler and I were two of 3 financial professionals asked to share our advice as people who are also active in non-profit work as board members. (A female majority?! What?)

I'm currently Treasurer for Oregon Mozart Players and Secretary for Parenting Now and give a lot of time to those organizations, but it was particularly powerful to speak to a whole room of non-profit Executive Directors.

Kimberly at was a delight to meet this afternoon. Her passion for her craft was really contagious, and I love seeing her new small business off to strong start.

I ended up leaving with a popular scent named "Brutal" by Pigmentarium. It's a hand-crafted scent by a former chemist who loves architecture and lives in Prague. The store is full of these stories about the small family-owned businesses she partners with from around the world.

I'm a complex and simple person.

I'm an anti-capitalist, socially progressive financial advisor. I believe in the government's role to check & tax corporations fairly in protection of the peoples' best interest.

And I also help my clients pay only their fair in taxes through careful tax planning and create investment portfolios to earn money from corporate activities. It's complicated.

I also believe we are better together through cooperation in almost every way...non-profits, small businesses, friendships, etc. I'll be your biggest supporter.

AND, if I play my husband in anything that could be construed as a game, I am the most competitive person on the planet. I don't pull punches.

For this reason, my husband and I are never allowed to play on different trivia teams or step into a tennis court.

AND supporting local, independent book stores = winning.

My family has a Christmas Eve tradition of opening up two special gifts we give every year: pajamas & Books. Then we get cozy in our new jammies, read books and drink cocoa together.

Both my kids are at the age where there interests are VERY specific, so it's better for everyone if they pick out which books they want.

Instead of making an Amazon wish list, this year I took them to Powell's Bookstore instead.

We had an amazing time making special holiday memories (just mom and kids this time!)

They also learn important money lessons about staying within a budget, prioritizing what you want most AND delayed gratification of waiting until christmas eve to read the new books.

At powell's, they can buy more books if they find the cheaper used version, so they are learning that it's normal to not buy everything brand new.

To be fair, my 12 yr old couldn't wait to read one of the books so we decided he would buy it for himself from his allowance money.

It was a great time and I'm a happy mama.

It's been a wonderful full weekend of spending time with friends & family:

💃I saw my friend Meagan and her amazing dance company at the All Out 90s show last night.

🌲This morning I shopped with my Mom at the holiday market at the Lane Fairgrounds and poured lots of money into the local economy (mostly at and )

🎄wreath-making with my friend Molly and her co-workers. This little pony caught my eye & he got a special bow for Christmas.

🏴‍☠️ about to watch The Goonies with some friends (one of them who had NEVER seen the movie and needs to be initiated)
