When we asked Tymeisha what she planned to do with her Grand Prize winnings of thousands of dollars, the busy mom of 2 didn’t hesitate to answer. “I’m a fairly new homeowner, so I could probably get some work done around the house,” she tells us.

The longtime client (10 years now with Jackson Hewitt!) works the night shift as a corrections officer in North Carolina and loves the work. Getting your taxes done usually means dealing with a number of documents, either online or on paper. But how long should you keep these tax docs after you’ve filed?

Generally, it’s a good idea to keep your tax return and any income statements related to it for at least 7 years. In the event you need to file an amended return due to a missed credit or deduction, you’ll have the documents you need to do that.

Doing your taxes often means dealing with a lot of paperwork, either online or the printed kind. So, what parts of that paperwork do you need keep for your records and what can you toss?
• Keep a copy of your tax return, as well as income statements related to your W-2s, 1099s and bank statements.
• Hang on to your invoices, receipts, and cancelled checks used from your business and other tax deductions for the year.
• You’ll also want to keep home closing statements (for new homeowners), property tax assessments, home improvement receipts, etc.
• Don’t toss out any additional income statements, such as investments you’ve made, too.
