Update on IRS status during the lockdown. Key points: they are still processing returns and payments but not processing refunds nor providing much if any customer service.
🚨 IRS Operations Update: Government Shutdown in Effect (as of October 8, 2025) 🚨
The federal government is currently experiencing a shutdown, and the IRS is operating under its official Contingency Lapse Plan. Here’s what this means for you:
What’s Still Operating: ✅ Processing of tax returns with payments (to protect government revenue) ✅ Electronic filing (e-file) is open for individuals and businesses ✅ Disaster relief transcripts and expedited transcripts for disaster victims (e.g., for SBA loans) ✅ Criminal investigations and law enforcement activities ✅ Activities to protect the government’s interest (statute expirations, bankruptcy, liens, seizures) ✅ Maintenance of IRS computer systems and security of taxpayer data ✅ Processing of mail containing payments ✅ Some contract work and essential building maintenance
What’s Limited or Suspended: 🚫 Most taxpayer assistance (phone support, walk-in centers) is unavailable 🚫 Paper returns without payments will NOT be processed until the shutdown ends 🚫 Refunds for returns filed without payment will be delayed 🚫 Most tax transcripts (unless for disaster relief) are not being processed 🚫 Most non-automated collection activities are paused 🚫 Most legal, planning, research, and administrative functions are suspended
Important Reminders: 🗓 Filing and payment deadlines remain in effect—there are NO automatic extensions due to the shutdown. 💻 File and pay electronically if possible to avoid delays. 💸 Payments are still due on time—penalties and interest may apply if you miss a deadline. 🌪 If you’re in a federally declared disaster area, check IRS.gov for any special relief.
What You Should Do:
Continue to file and pay taxes as usual, especially if you owe.
Use IRS.gov for forms, publications, and updates.
Expect delays in processing of paper returns, refunds, and correspondence.
No live phone or in-person assistance is available during the shutdown.
For Businesses & Disaster Victims:
Payroll tax deposits and business tax payments must still be made on time.
Expedited transcript services for disaster relief are still available.
We’re monitoring the situation and will keep you updated. If you have urgent tax questions, please reach out to us for guidance!
Stay tuned for more updates, and thank you for your patience during this time.
