Warren Buffett has said more than once that “risk comes from not knowing what you're doing.”

So let's take a look at a situation that arose from not completely understanding how things work due to details that might not be fully understood.

There is an underlying idea that permeates the financial world that says bonds are safer than stocks. And at the top of this “safety” structure US Treasury bonds reign supreme, as they are backed by the full faith and credit of the US government. US Treasury bonds are considered the safest investment by investors the world over, and most, if not all interest rate products (mortgages, credit cards, bank savings rates, etc.) are related in some way to what US Treasury bonds are paying.

You should not invest in the stock market, the bond market, the commodities market, or any market if you cannot handle volatility. Period.

Why?

Because, by nature these markets are volatile. If you cannot stomach seeing the value of your account go down, don't invest. People that cannot withstand this, will act counter to their best interests and many times will lose money. My professional advice would be to not invest.

The story is told of a Seeker of Knowledge who sets off in search of the answer to a question that has unsettled him for quite some time. In his extensive travels, the Seeker of Knowledge hears of two wise men who are said by many to be very knowledgeable and experienced in such matters.

The first, a famous guru lives in an ivory tower at the top of a serene mountain high above all the hustle and bustle of everyday life. After a strenuous climb, the seeker reaches the top of the mountain, finds the sage inside his tower and poses his burning question, “What is a stock worth?”

I can't think of any other 97 year-old-person I'd rather listen to than Charlie Munger. Billionaire Charlie Munger is one of the most successful investors of all time and he also happens to be Warren Buffett's partner for over 50 years.

Charlie Munger is Vice-Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, on the Board of Costco, and Chairman of the Board of the Daily Journal Corporation (a newspaper publisher and software developer).

Of course Mr. Munger is well-known for his investing prowess, but he is equally respected for his thoughts outside of investing. Investors and just about everyone would be well advised to follow many of the principals and ideas Mr. Munger has shared over the years.
