The announced Monday, January 26, 2026, as the opening of the nation’s 2026 filing season. You will have until Wednesday, April 15, 2026, to file your 2025 tax returns and pay any tax due. Don’t forget that IRS.gov has online tools and resources you can use before, during and after filing your federal tax return. Most people already use direct deposit for their tax refund, but starting this year it's now required to get your refund. Similarly if you owe tax you can no longer send a check but must pay online. If you need help with your taxes please reach out!

A little preparation goes a long way, especially when it comes to tax filing. One thing you can do now to make filing season easier: Find your direct deposit information. If you don't have a bank account, you have a few options you can plan ahead for. Things like prepaid debit cards, digital wallets or mobile apps support direct deposit.

I guess not everything you read on social media is true. Bad tax advice can become much more expensive than good tax advice.

Did you also know there are zero credentials required to have a tax business? No professional license, no experience, and no education of any kind. If you're providing a haircut, a massage, or handyman services you must be licensed, but tax services? No requirement. It's left up to you as the consumer to vet whoever you have help you with your taxes.

The safest bet is to hire a CPA - CPAs must meet college degree requirements (most have master's), pass all 4 parts of the CPA exam, Utah laws & rules exam, and ethics exam, have experience working under a CPA, and complete at least 80 hours of continuing education every 2 years.
