The IRS just announced Failure to File penalty relief for anyone who has not filed their 2019 & 2020 tax returns. This is huge. Taxpayers will have until September 30, 2022 to file their late returns without the Failure to File penalty. Anyone who has already filed and paid the penalty should be receiving a check or bank draft returning their funds paid for the penalty.

For people who don't have their direct deposit information on file with the IRS, they just opened up a portal on irs.gov to enter that information. You will need information from your 2019 tax return to complete this process. This will make getting the stimulus payment easier and quicker.

If you have not filed your 2019 tax return, you cannot enter your bank information in this portal. You could however, go ahead and file your 2019 return and just enter your bank information there. If not, you will receive a paper check which will take longer to get.

If anyone needs advice on how to do this. Let me know and I will do my best to help.

4-2-2020 UPDATE TO BELOW: This issue has been resolved and Social Security recipients who do not normally file will no longer need to file a simple return in order to receive a stimulus payment.

IMPORTANT UPDATE:

I am starting to hear that Senior Citizens who are on Social Security and do not normally file a tax return WILL need to file in order to qualify for the stimulus payment. This will not result in a tax liability.

This is going to be a struggle for them. Especially in this Internet and technology age.

If any senior citizen needs assistance in completing their return, I am here for them at no cost, provided I am able to get all their information in a secure way and one that does't involve putting them at risk of COVID-19. I am working on a plan to accomplish this now.

Also, please be on the lookout for scams. The IRS or any State Department of Revenue will never call and ask for your information.

Stay safe out there and practice social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

I hope everyone is staying safe during these trying times. Please see below to keep you informed about scams surrounding...

I hope everyone is staying safe during these trying times. Please see below to keep you informed about scams surrounding the stimulus payments. If anyone has any questions, please let me know.

Please practice social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

1. Be alert for phone scams.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Treasury Department, or any other government agency will not contact you by phone to collect information for stimulus payment processing. Period.

2. Be alert for phishing scams.
Government agencies will not email or text you to collect information for stimulus payment processing. Watch for suspicious emails or texts with links or attachments requesting information for processing stimulus deposits or checks. If you receive one, do not click the link or open the attachment. It’s a scam. Delete it.

3. Be alert for state-related scams.
State agencies will also not call, email or text you to collect information or a fee to process a stimulus payment. To date, no state has introduced their own version of a stimulus payment.

As of now, we are only aware of one communication a taxpayer will receive from the IRS. No later than 15 days after distributing a stimulus payment, the IRS is required to mail a notice to the taxpayer indicating the payment amount, whether the payment was mailed or deposited, and a phone number to call if the taxpayer did not receive the payment.

Victims or targets of stimulus payment scams should report it immediately to the Federal Trade Commission, www.ftc.gov/complaint.

We will provide more information about the IRS’s plans to process stimulus payments as it becomes available.

IdentityTheft.gov is the federal government's one-stop resource for identity theft victims. The site provides streamlined checklists and sample letters to guide you through the recovery process. Visit ftc.gov/idtheft for prevention tips and free resources to share in your community.

Update:

North Carolina has followed suit with the IRS and the tax filing deadline has been extended till July 15, 2020.

There is a difference though. Although the filing deadline has been extended and penalties will not be imposed, interest will begin to accrue after April 15, 2020.

My professional advice is if you can file and pay both Federal and State, go ahead and do it. If not, go ahead and file by April 15, 2020 and do your best to make the State payment by April 15th.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Please practice social distancing to avoid the spread of COVID-19. Stay safe out there everyone.
