If you are feeling overwhelmed by your finances I would suggest a 3 month review of your spending.

Download transactions into an excel workbook. Categorize it all, then use a pivot table to review a 3 month trend.

What is an asset?

In accounting terms an asset is simply something owned by a business. This could be land, a building, equipment such as heavy machinery for a manufacturer or computers and servers for a web hosting company, vehicles and much more.

Anything owned by a business that will have a value for more than a year is an asset. To determine the dollar value of what is an asset and what isn't accountants will always ask for a Capitalization Policy.

This is a policy that tells employees, accountants, and vendors the dollar amount an item has to be at minimum before it is considered an asset. This is a must have, and it typically ranges between $500-$1,500. This does depend on your industry, business, and preference though so the standard amount may not apply.

It doesn't hurt to consult an accounting professional who can help you put this together.
