Most of us spend decades focused on how much we save. Far fewer of us think about where we save it.

Your retirement savings generally fall into three tax buckets:

🟢 Tax-Free
Money that may be available in retirement without creating additional taxable income.

🔴 Tax-Deferred
Money you may receive a tax benefit on today, but generally pay taxes on when you withdraw it later.

🟣 Taxable

Money that may be taxed along the way through interest, dividends, or capital gains.

On National Savings Day, it’s worth remembering that saving is only part of the equation. Where your money sits can make a big difference when it’s time to start taking income.

Saving is step one. Keeping more of what you’ve saved is step two.

Three things I would never ask AI about my retirement:

1️⃣ Anything personal. AI doesn’t know your health, your family, or how you want to use your money in future.

2️⃣ Tax advice. Your tax decisions depend on your whole financial picture, and AI gives one-size-fits-all answers.

3️⃣ To be my planner. How and when you retire is too important to hand off to a general answer.

AI is a great place to learn. It’s not the place to make your decisions.

Tonight we kick off another Power of Zero retirement workshop at Ohio Wesleyan University.

Over two evenings, we'll work through the questions that come up as retirement gets closer.

AI can answer a lot of questions. But some retirement questions are too important to trust to a one-size-fits-all answer.

AI doesn’t know your full financial picture, your health, your family, your goals, or how you want to use your money in retirement.

That is why questions like these should not be left to AI:

❌ How much should I convert to a Roth?

❌ How much should I withdraw from my portfolio?

❌ What should my stock and bond mix be?

❌ What tax strategy is best for me?

❌ When should I take Social Security?

❌ How should Medicare factor into my plan?

❌ What investment strategy should I use?

Instead, use AI to learn and ask better questions. But when it comes to your retirement and your money, work with a trusted advisor who understands your specific situation, goals, and needs.

If you’re making retirement decisions based on generic advice, it may be time for a second opinion. Talk with an advisor who can help you build a plan around you.
