I’m pre-empting my usual Smart to Fish Wild post today because September 3 marks one of my favorite days of the year: the opening game of the CU Buffs football season.

I’m already looking forward to cutting out of the office a little early, heading to Boulder, and gathering with a group of my Psi Chai buddies at one of our favorite spots to watch the game. I’ve been a die-hard Buffs fan for as long as I can remember, but what makes days like this especially meaningful is getting to share them with friends who have been part of my life since college.

There is something pretty special about being able to reconnect, tell a few old stories, relive the glory days, and still get just as excited for kickoff as we did back then.

Here’s to a new season, old friends, and hopefully a great start for the Buffs.

The older I get, the faster September seems to arrive.

Maybe it's because football season is back, or maybe it's because another year has seemed to have flown by. Either way, September is one of those months that reminds me how quickly opportunities can pass if we aren't paying attention.

One opportunity I encourage people to revisit each fall is their retirement plan contributions.

If you're 50 or older, your retirement plan may allow you to make additional catch-up contributions beyond the standard annual limit. And for those who are ages 60 through 63 in 2026, there may be an opportunity to contribute even more, depending on your employer's retirement plan. There are also new rules that may require some higher-income participants to make those catch-up contributions on a Roth basis rather than pre-tax.

I don't bring this up because everyone should make the same decision. In fact, quite the opposite. These changes are a good reminder that retirement planning isn't something you set on autopilot in January and revisit when you file your taxes.

September is a great time to pause, review your current contributions, confirm they're aligned with your goals, and make sure you're taking advantage of the opportunities available to you.

Sometimes the biggest difference in long-term planning isn't making dramatic changes. It's simply making sure you don't let another year slip by without being intentional.

My CPA and I have a meeting coming up, and to be honest, it’s one I always appreciate having.

As a business owner, it is easy to get caught up in serving clients and managing the day-to-day. My CPA makes sure I step back, review how the year is unfolding, and understand whether anything has changed from the assumptions we made earlier in the year.

This year, we have talked a few times about the Qualified Business Income, or QBI, deduction (https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/qualified-business-income-deduction). In simple terms, it may allow eligible owners of certain pass-through businesses to deduct a portion of their qualified business income, although the amount and availability depend on several factors.

I do not provide tax advice, and I certainly do not try to be my own CPA. I rely on a trusted professional to help me understand the tax implications of my business, just as my clients rely on me to help connect taxes, investments, retirement, estate planning, and their broader financial goals.

If you are a business owner, this may be a good time to reconnect with your CPA and review where the year stands. A little clarity today is usually better than an unexpected surprise next spring.

Philanthropic Planning...
..is one of the key pillars I often discuss with both prospective and existing clients. It's also one of those topics I find is often overlooked in long-term financial planning discussions.

Yet, and maybe this is just my experience, I find that most people genuinely want to give. They just don't believe they can do so. There's often a concern that charitable giving will come at the expense of retirement, their family, or other financial goals.

The reality is that philanthropic planning isn't about choosing between giving and achieving your financial objectives. It's about taking a thoughtful approach to your financial resources so you can support the causes that matter to you while remaining on track toward your other goals.

For some, that may mean giving during their lifetime. For others, it may involve family, creating a charitable legacy, or simply being more intentional about where and how they give. There isn't a right or wrong approach. The goal is simply to align your giving with your values and the impact you hope to make.

If you're curious about philanthropic planning or simply want to explore what's possible, drop me a DM and let's find a time to chat. Giving has always been an important part of my life, and it's a conversation I genuinely enjoy having.

If you have followed me for some time, you know by now that I am passionate about fly fishing and conservation.

That passion has shaped more than how I spend my time outside the office. It has also influenced how I think about wealth, stewardship, and the responsibility to protect the places and resources that matter to us.

For many people, charitable giving is something considered at the end of the year or after every other financial priority has been addressed. I believe it deserves a place much earlier in the planning conversation.

When philanthropy is considered as part of a comprehensive financial plan, it can become more intentional and better aligned with your broader goals. That may mean supporting river restoration, protecting public lands, improving wildlife habitat, or contributing to another cause that reflects what you value most.

One of the most rewarding parts of my work is helping people understand that meaningful giving and long-term financial security do not have to compete with one another.

A well-designed financial plan should do more than address investments and retirement. It should reflect the life you want to live, the values you want to support, and the impact you hope to make.

For me, that includes helping preserve the rivers, landscapes, and wild places that have given so much to all of us.

How do you rebuild purpose, community, and strategy after life forces you to completely hit reset?

This week on Smart To Fish Wild, we sit down with Christian Bacasa—Head of Revenue Architecture at 9606.ai, host of the Fly Fishing Insider Podcast, and a passionate outdoor educator.

Following a Stage IV Hodgkin's disease diagnosis that abruptly halted his high-impact athletic pursuits, Christian discovered fly fishing during his recovery. What started as a healing outlet quickly evolved into a masterclass in problem-solving, patience, and deliberate observation.

In this episode, Christian breaks down the parallels between engineering predictable systems in enterprise tech/AI and reading complex currents on the water. He shares why success—whether scaling a revenue engine or dialing in a Euro nymphing rig—comes down to testing hypotheses, making micro-adjustments, and slowing down to truly observe your environment. Plus, we dive into his hands-on conservation work with the Great Salt Lake and how he uses fly fishing to mentor fellow cancer survivors through their own recovery journeys.

I talk about conservation finance quite a bit, and I've found that before we can have a meaningful conversation about it, I usually need to explain what it actually is. So I thought I'd do that today.

Conservation finance is simply the use of financial tools and resources to protect, restore, and sustain the natural places we care about.

Whether it's conserving a fishery, restoring habitat, protecting open space, or improving water quality, these efforts require more than good intentions. They require a long-term funding strategy.

That's where conservation finance comes in.

It brings together philanthropy, private investment, public funding, and other financial tools to help ensure conservation efforts aren't just started, but sustained for generations.

As both a financial planner and someone who cares deeply about conservation, I find that connection fascinating.

Because at its core, conservation finance isn't just about money.

It's about creating a plan today that protects something valuable for tomorrow.

As another fall semester begins at CU Boulder, I've been thinking about something I never expected to learn there.

It wasn't a lesson from a textbook or a lecture hall. It was the realization that learning doesn't end when you graduate.

Looking back, some of the biggest learning experiences of my life came long after I left Boulder.

I never imagined I'd one day host the Smart to Fish Wild podcast, sitting down with fascinating people from all walks of life and learning from their experiences. I certainly never thought I'd become comfortable speaking on camera. And like many parents, raising teenagers and now young adults has been an education all its own.

Those experiences have reminded me that growth often begins when we're willing to try something new, ask better questions, and admit we don't have all the answers.

The same is true in my work. Financial planning is constantly evolving because life is constantly evolving. Every client has a different story, different priorities, and different challenges. Staying curious isn't just part of being a good advisor; it's part of being a good listener.

I'm grateful for the education I received at CU, but I'm even more grateful that it instilled a mindset of lifelong learning.

To the Buffs beginning a new semester, embrace the opportunities in front of you. And to my fellow alumni, I hope you're still saying yes to learning something new. The degree you earned is important, but the curiosity you continue to cultivate may be one of the greatest gifts your time at CU gave you.

Forever proud to be a Buff. Go Buffs!
