The biggest avoidable mistake small tax offices make has nothing to do with pricing or staffing or marketing.

It's treating too much of the off-season like downtime instead of the only window they have to work on the business.

You can't evaluate your setup while you're dependent on it. That only happens now.

Having short hold times means nothing if you have to explain the same problem to 3 different people and end up with nothing resolved after a week.

When you ask tax preparers why they're using their current software, the answer is almost never "because I compared my options and this was the best fit operationally and financially."

It's usually: I've always used it. My mentor used it. Switching felt like too much.

Those aren't bad reasons if you're getting a great deal and love the software, but if you've never actually sat down and compared, now's the time.

You may not switch, but at least you'll have confidence rather than assumptions.

Most companies you work with in the tax prep industry are not your partners.

They're vendors.

Sometimes a vendor relationship is fine, but picking partners where it matters can make the difference between failure and success for your business.

Here's a quick test: A vendor just tries to sell you more or renew you every year. A partner tells you when things aren't working and bring ideas to help you grow - even if it doesn't mean more money for them.

Think about where vendor is ok and where you need partners.

You: "I know what I pay annually for tax prep software."Us: "But what about fees after software, bank product, business ...

Us: "But what about fees after software, bank product, business and prior year returns, and other added transactional fees - what are you actually netting?"

You: "...I've never broken it down that way."

Us: "Ok, let us break it all down for you and then we'll show you."

This conversation happens too often.

The process with us is easy and takes 10 minutes. For those who realize they've lost thousands in profit over the years, it's much harder to handle.
