PSA...for those of you who had a balance due the IRS and have now received a letter requesting you to update your direct deposit information: This is a known "glitch" with the IRS. I feel like we've been saying this since the early COVID years and I swear it's true, lol!
Per the IRS-The IRS is sending CP53E notices in 2026 due to a major push to phase out paper checks, which has caused a surge in letters to taxpayers with missing or mismatched direct deposit information. While intended to verify banking details for refunds, many of these letters are being sent in error to taxpayers who did not request a refund, including those with automatic debit payments, due to a known system glitch. Key details regarding these letters: System Glitch: Many taxpayers receiving CP53E letters actually have an overpayment that was applied to next year's taxes, not a refund owed, making the notice incorrect. New 2026 Rules: The IRS is freezing refunds if direct deposit information is missing, requiring taxpayers to provide it or wait for a delayed paper check. Verification: Taxpayers should check their online IRS account to verify if a refund is actually pending. Action Required: If the letter is legitimate, you may need to update banking information online; if it's a false positive, it can often be ignored, though it causes confusion.
