This is for those who do not know yet. The income Tax filing deadline for the 2016 filing year was April 18th,2017 but if you were in an area that was affected by a disaster in 2016 and your parish was declared a federal disaster area you have until July 15,2017 to file your taxes on time. The IRS gives an extension automatically when they declare your area a federal disaster area. Those of you who did not live in a declared disaster area and missed the deadline of April 18th, you are late in filing your income tax return and will be assessed penalties and interest along with a not filing on time penalty on what ever you owe the IRS and the State Dept. I just wanted to put this out there so that everyone knows how the system works. Now, if you filed for an extension of time to file you will still need to make a payment towards your tax liability and will be assessed penalties and interest on what you owe. Filing an extension does not stop interest and penalties.
