Warning⚠️ Long Post. But MUST READ ALL
Have you been waiting longer then 30 days for your tax return? You MIGHT be eligible to get help with making the process faster by getting a IRS Tax Advocate.
Please please make sure you truly qualify. One of the BIGGEST reasons for such a backlog with the TA dept is so many taxpayers that are requesting a TA and do not even qualify.
To request a Tax Advocate...
Please click on the link and scroll to the middle of the page and look for "Find a local TAS office" Enter your state and choose the closest Tax Advocate Office to your home. Write down the phone number, address, and fax number. Try to call and get through and they can do the application over the phone. If you can NOT get a hold of anyone please download the attached IRS Form 911 " Request for Taxpayer Advocate Service Assistance"
Fill out ONLY section I and fax it over to your local Tax Advocate Office. Once your case is assigned someone will call you, which could possibly take up to 4 weeks due to the extreme backlog of the IRS.

**PLEASE NOTE!!!!
Not everyone is eligible for a Tax Advocate. YOU must have one of the following extreme situations.
1. Financial Hardship
Financial Hardship (Economic burden) is when you are experiencing financial difficulty. You'll need to describe the hardship that is causing an economic burden, and you will be required to provide documentation to verify the hardship.(IE Eviction notice, shut off notices, repo, etc)
2. IRS System Issue
IRS System Issue is when an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) process, system, Internal Revenue Code (IRC) or procedure has failed to operate properly. (IE stuck in back to 60 day Reviews, Return was kicked out of normal processing for no reason, tax return wad resquenced)
3. Fair & Equitable Treatment
TAS will help ensure that you receive fair and equitable treatment and that your rights as a taxpayer are protected.
(IE if you feel and can prove you are being treated unfairly due to race, status, religion, disability, sexual orientation or gender)
*****See below for the ONLY cases the Tax Advocates Office is currently taken (if you first fall into one of the above categories)
Can TAS help me with my tax issue?
To better serve taxpayers and businesses, the Taxpayer Advocate Service is taking steps to help address the IRS tax return inventory backlog by temporarily amending the types of cases we can currently accept.
I Have a Tax Issue With My Original or Amended Individual or Business Income Tax Return for...
Tax Year 2021 (Which is our current tax season)
The Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) is currently assisting taxpayers with tax year 2021 Amended cases where the IRS HAS PROCESSED the return and HAS ALREADY made adjustments and sent the taxpayer a notice discussing the adjustments and the taxpayer had to Amend.
TAS is NOT currently assisting taxpayers with tax year 2021 income tax returns waiting on the system to verify any new 2021 tax credits(IE Any Taxpayer with form 8821, 7202, and RRC), until the return is fully processed and there is still a delay.
TAS is NOT currently assisting taxpayers with tax year 2021 income tax returns who had their refunds stopped by the IRS program designed to verify the validity of income documents (Wage Review) or where the IRS requests additional information or documentation from the taxpayer to finish processing the return. (Audit) We will continue to evaluate our ability to accept these cases as the IRS resolves its backlog.
TAS is NOT currently assisting taxpayers with unprocessed tax year 2021 income tax returns not yet entered into the IRS system. We will continue to evaluate our ability to accept these cases as the IRS resolves its backlog
Tax Year 2020 (or Earlier)
The Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) is currently assisting taxpayers with tax year 2020 or earlier income tax returns filed BEFORE January 1, 2022 (NOT TAXPAYERS WHO FILED THIS YEAR FOR A PREVIOUS YEAR) who had their refund stopped by the IRS program designed to verify the validity of income documents. (IE 60 Day Reviews, ID Verifys, Just lost in space with absolutely zero information on why)
TAS is currently assisting taxpayers with unprocessed tax year 2020 or earlier income tax returns filed BEFORE June 1, 2021 that the IRS has not yet entered into its systems. (IE Your Account Transcript says "No Tax Return on File", Mailed In Returns.) We will continue to evaluate our ability to accept these cases as the IRS resolves its backlog.
TAS is NOT currently assisting taxpayers with income tax returns stopped by the IRS
while the IRS requests additional information or documentation from the taxpayer to finish processing the return. (IE Wage Review, Audits) We will continue to evaluate our ability to accept these cases as the IRS resolves its backlog.
