As a payroll manager, I'm always surprised when leadership is caught off-guard by this.

👀 Did your January payroll come in higher than expected?
You’re not alone and it’s likely not a mistake.

🧐 One reason for the increase is likely the annual tax and regulatory resets
that take place on January 1st every year. 👇 👇 👇

🔄 Social Security reset: The 6.2% employer match restarts on
employee wages until the annual cap is reached. 2025 cap
was $176,100 and the 2026 cap is $184,500.

🔄 Unemployment tax resets: Federal (FUTA) taxes apply again to
the first $7000 of each employee’s wages paid in the year (the
wage base remains unchanged for 2026).

⭕ Bottom line: This increase is normal and predictable. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, and it should be built into your Q1 budget every year.
