IRS cuts mean more work for tax pros
Staff reductions at the IRS are placing a greater responsibility on tax professionals to clarify the implications of H.R. 1, also known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Terry Lemons, a former communications chief at the IRS, highlighted that 44% of the staff has been cut, leading to concerns about the agency's ability to communicate effectively. “That's going to be an added challenge for the agency to get out enough communication,” Mr. Lemons stated. With 25,000 employees leaving since February, the IRS faces significant challenges in implementing the new law, which requires extensive changes across its operations. A report by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration noted that 25,386 employees left the IRS through incentive programs as of May 2025. Mr. Lemons emphasized that tax professionals will need to educate clients more due to the reduced communication from the IRS.

IRS and Federal Government Will Stop Accepting Paper Checks as Payments
In addition to halting issuing of paper checks, the government will no longer accept paper checks as payment.

The order calls for a significant public awareness campaign regarding the shift and for the Treasury to work with financial institutions, consumer groups and other organizations “to address financial access for unbanked and underbanked populations.”
