📊 HOW TO READ A PROFIT & LOSS STATEMENT (AND WHY EVERY BUSINESS OWNER SHOULD!) 💰💼
Do you know how much money your business is ACTUALLY making? 🤔
Many business owners look at their bank account balance to determine how well their business is doing. But here's the thing — money in the bank doesn't always mean your business is profitable! 💡
That's where your Profit & Loss Statement (P&L) comes in!
A P&L is one of the most important financial reports for your business, and understanding it can help you make smarter financial decisions. 📈
Here's a simple breakdown! 👇
💵 1️⃣ INCOME – What's Coming In?
This is the revenue your business earns from selling products or providing services.
Ask yourself:
✔️ Is my revenue increasing or decreasing?
✔️ Which services or products bring in the most money?
✔️ Am I bringing in enough revenue to cover my expenses?
💳 2️⃣ EXPENSES – Where's My Money Going?
These are the costs of operating your business, such as payroll, rent, insurance, supplies, advertising, and other operating expenses.
Ask yourself:
✔️ Are my expenses increasing faster than my revenue?
✔️ Am I spending money on things my business doesn't really need?
✔️ Are there opportunities to reduce costs?
📈 3️⃣ NET PROFIT – What Am I Actually Making?
This is what's left after subtracting your business expenses from your income.
💰 Income – Expenses = Net Profit (or Loss)
For example:
💵 Revenue: $25,000
💳 Expenses: $18,000
✅ Net Profit: $7,000
That means your business earned $7,000 in profit for that period — but remember, profit and cash in the bank are NOT the same thing!
🔎 4️⃣ LOOK AT THE BIGGER PICTURE!
Don't just review one month. Compare your financials month to month and year to year!
📊 Are sales growing?
📉 Are expenses getting out of control?
💰 Is your profit improving?
🎯 Are you meeting your financial goals?
Understanding these numbers helps you make better decisions about hiring, pricing, spending, and growing your business.
