Due to the Coronavirus, we are starting the process of filing extensions today. This is a precaution not just for us in the event of office staff getting sick but also to alleviate any concerns you may have about getting out to drop of information or to pick up tax returns.
If we prepared your tax return last year, you will automatically be on our list for filing an extension for your year 2019 tax return. We do this as a courtesy so there is no cost for you to either us or the IRS for filing an extension.
An extension is to file the return but not to pay the tax. The extension allows a taxpayer to file the return any time up until October 15th. Although there would be no late filing penalties, the IRS would charge interest and a ½% per month late paying fee from April 15th on any balance due until the tax was paid. Therefore, we recommend that you make a payment to the IRS of any estimated amount you believe may be owed. This can be done online or by sending a payment with a voucher but please give us a call if you need assistance.
