On this, one of the most important days of the year for tax preparers, we must ask you all for pardon.
It may take us a little while longer to dig out today.
We are hoping to be in by 10am.

Stay warm!

Edit:
We will likely have someone in at noon, but the street department is still working to clear the parking on central. We have no updates to when you'll be able to park and get in the building from the street.

It's not even technically tax season yet and we've already found $1,000 left on the table from another nationally known tax office.

The green brick tax office may have national advertising dollars, but they don't have the experience we do. Spend your money with a full time, year round tax professional and not with a glorified ad agency.

Today is 529 day!
If you've never looked in to the 529 savings program and you have children, you absolutely should. Indiana has a great credit that can earn you up to $1,000 in tax savings for putting money in a college savings account.
I recommend this for anyone with children in High School or younger.

I've spoken with several clients to warn them that the wages and rent paid with the PPP loan, per prior IRS standards, will likely not be deductible. The IRS affirmed this with a recent tax notice (https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-drop/n-20-32.pdf).
It appears now that congress intends to specifically enumerate that expenses paid for with PPP funds will in fact be deducible.
Even if they don't, because members of congress have offered their support of the position, expect this issue to be challenged.

The IRS has ruled out tax deductions for wages and rent paid with forgivable loans, but Congress could push back to allow the deductions. The stakes matter to businesses who scooped up Paycheck Protection Program loans of up to $10M to keep their employees on the payroll during the shutdown.

We're hearing from other tax professionals who have contacts within the IRS that the service doesn't have enough employees to open the mail (Much less respond to it). This in addition to phone centers being for all intents and purposes closed means that the IRS is in essence closed.
Even before the COVID shutdown we found the IRS "lost" at least 30% of all written correspondence. This mail backlog will have profound impacts on IRS service for the foreseeable future.

Worth mentioning again. The IRS will never call you and request personal information over the phone. You should not give out your bank account information to anyone via the phone.

We have heard the IRS stimulus tracking website is now working for people that need to update bank information for direct deposit of COVID 19 stimulus payments. If you are not able to update your information successfully, you should try once per day at the same time. The IRS updates their records once per day, and the IRS will only allow 3 attempts per day before you are denied access from the system.
If you are content to wait on your stimulus check to be mailed, you'll likely see those funds this summer.
The stimulus will not affect your 2020 tax refund negatively; though you may be eligible for additional funds based on your 2020 income.
