Most business owners talk to their CPA once a year… and then wonder why tax season feels stressful.

In the latest Empowering Healthy Business Podcast, Gregory Reed breaks down what your CPA should be telling you (but often doesn’t), including the difference between tax filing and real tax planning.

A few takeaways:

Don’t rely on a single “tax season” conversation

Plan across the full year, not just March/April

Safe-harbor estimates can protect you from penalties, but still tie up cash

Big life or business changes need a quick heads-up to your CPA

If you want fewer surprises and better decisions, this is a good listen.

Most business owners extend credit without really knowing who they’re lending to. That means more bad debt, slower cash flow, and higher fraud risk.

In this episode of the Empowering Healthy Business podcast, I sat down with Brian Suthoff, founder of Truverto, to talk about how small and mid-size B2B companies can finally start getting real value from credit bureaus.

We covered:

Why most SMBs haven’t benefited from credit reporting

How automation now makes it practical to contribute and get insights back

Ways to use bureau data to reduce risk, forecast cash, and spot growth opportunities

If your business offers payment terms, this episode is worth a listen.

SALT cap moving to $40k and how PTET still fits

R&D expensing fix (amend prior years or expense in 2025/2026)

A niche but huge write-off for new manufacturing buildings (2026–2031 window)

1099 threshold relief (starts after 2025 filings)

Take action: book a short planning session, model PTET vs. SALT, and lock asset timing/documentation now.

As the foliage is changing colors here in New England, we are reminded that the end of the year is approaching.

For us bookkeepers and accountants, that means we need to clean up any lingering issues in QuickBooks to get ready for final annual reporting and tax filings and start budgeting for next year.

As businesses operate over the course of the year, they tend to focus on the income statement (the “P&L”). While the P&L can look reasonable from month to month, and bank accounts reconcile OK, issues can accumulate on the balance sheet:

-Certain accounts receivable are uncollectible and need to be written off
-Fixed assets no longer in service need to be cleared out
-Loan liabilities need to tie to loan schedules and statements
-Intercompany accounts need to tie
-Payroll liabilities need to be reconciled and adjusted
-Inventory needs to be adjusted to match what is actually on hand
-The Ask My Accountant account has a balance in it

These problems may not stand out in a monthly P&L. However, they add up and can cloud your numbers and misrepresent your annual results. Now is the time to fix them.

This is also the time of year to be making financial plans for next year. This can be a basic, high-level exercise to confirm revenue and expense and profit metrics for the year. Or it can involve very granular line-item budgeting of revenue, expense, profit, departmental P&L metrics, cash flow, and balance sheet accounts. Even a basic plan is infinitely better than no plan.

This Fall, we’re offering QuickBooks cleanups and annual budgeting services.

Most business leaders rely on data, reports, and analysis to guide decisions. But what happens when the numbers don’t tell the full story?

In this episode of the Empowering Healthy Business Podcast, host Calvin Wilder talks with Nick Musica, founder of Optics In LLC, about how intuition plays a critical role in better business decisions, especially when data alone isn’t enough.

Here’s what you’ll learn:

How awareness and meditation help leaders make clearer decisions
Why intuition isn’t “guesswork” — it’s a skill you can develop
How to balance logic with instinct when facing tough business calls
The practical ways intuition shows up in conversations, leadership, and growth

Nick shares how tuning into intuition helped him shift from a stable W-2 career to running a successful digital agency, and how the same approach helps other professionals overcome indecision and lead with confidence.

Most people think of fraud as stolen credit cards or hacked bank accounts. But there’s another growing risk, title fraud and squatting.

In this episode of the Empowering Healthy Business Podcast, Calvin Wilder sits down with Curt Moore, founder of Moat Title Security and a former landman in the oil & gas industry, to explain how criminals steal value from properties and how homeowners can protect themselves.
You’ll hear how:

Fraudsters record fake deeds to take loans or resell properties
Squatters create legal headaches that take months to resolve
Proactive filings, like a Title Freeze or Notice of Occupancy, deter these threats
