If you receive an IRS CP53E notice in the mail, here's how to verify whether it's real before taking any action.

First, log into your IRS Online Account at irs.gov. Any legitimate notice will appear there.

Second, check your refund status using the "Where's My Refund?" tool at irs.gov/refunds.

Third, if you want to speak with someone, call the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040.

Remember: the IRS cannot update your bank account information by phone or in person! That can only be done through your IRS Online Account.
