Many couples plan for retirement together. But not enough couples plan for what happens financially when one spouse passes away.

In our next Overtime Earnings episode, available this Friday, we discuss the “widow penalty." This is the financial impact that may occur when a surviving spouse moves from married filing jointly to single filing status while also losing one Social Security check.

The takeaway: retirement planning should not only focus on income while both spouses are living. It should also address how the surviving spouse will be protected.

The Summit is Only Halfway There. 🏔️

Most of our working lives are spent focused on the ascent—accumulating assets, chasing growth, and reaching that "magic number" for retirement. But as any mountaineer will tell you, the descent is often the most dangerous part of the journey.

Retirement readiness isn’t just about hitting a peak net worth; it’s about having a strategy to get back down the mountain safely and with confidence. That means shifting your portfolio from pure "growth" mode to "income and preservation" mode depending on your goals and risk tolerance.

If you are within nearing retirement, we need to stop asking "How much can I make?" and start asking "How do I turn this into a paycheck that meets my long-term goals?"

Let’s discuss your descent strategy!

You know that feeling when you wake up on a Saturday morning with absolutely nothing on your calendar? The coffee tastes better. The air feels lighter. You can just breathe.

Understanding that outcomes vary, this is what a well-structured financial plan should feel like—every single day.

'Investing made simple' isn’t about dumbing things down. It’s about clearing the clutter so you can help reduce the worry about the future and start enjoying the present.

Wealth isn't just the number in the bank. It's the freedom to wake up and ask, 'What do I want to do today?' rather than 'What do I have to do?'

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Could your children manage your portfolio tomorrow?

May is graduation season. As we watch the next generation step up, it’s a good time to look at your estate plan with a critical eye.

If something happened to you today, would your family understand what you own?

I’ve seen estates that are a tangle of fragmented accounts, forgotten private equity capital calls, and unrecorded cost bases. That isn’t a legacy; that’s a burden.

Simplifying your investments isn't just for your peace of mind—it’s an act of stewardship for the people you love.

Consolidate accounts. Update beneficiaries. Create a 'Letter of Instruction.' Make it simple for them to carry the torch.

One of the most common retirement questions is: “When should I turn on Social Security?”

The truth is, there isn’t one magic age that works for everyone.

In this week's episode of the Overtime Earnings Podcast, we discuss why Social Security timing depends on factors such as:

💵income needs
🏢whether you’re still working
🩺health and longevity

The age that you claim Social Security can lead to very different outcomes — and the right choice should be based on your overall retirement plan. Check out the episode this week to learn more! Please connect with us if Social Security planning is on your mind!

Time and Energy are very important returns to consider along with the other metrics you are tracking.

We spend hours analyzing ROI (return on investment), IRR (internal rate of return), and P/E (price-to-earnings) ratios. For some high-net-worth individuals, the most critical metric is ROTE: Return on Time and Energy.

A complex portfolio that requires you to approve K-1s in five different states, constantly rebalance, and monitor liquidity events is a portfolio that is important for some, but for others simplifying the portfolio may help get time and energy back.

Simplicity feels like ultimate luxury.

A streamlined investment strategy can help free up time and buy back your Saturday mornings, give you presence at dinner, and supports your mental bandwidth.

If your wealth is causing you stress rather than solving it, it might be time to review the profile.

✅ Why the worst plan is not having a plan

These conversations are designed to help families think ahead, understand their options, and start important planning discussions before life forces the issue.

Are you trying to call the plays or build the franchise?

High-performing professionals often struggle to switch hats when it comes to their money. They are used to being the quarterback—making every snap decision in real-time.

But to simplify your wealth, you need to move from the field to the Front Office.

Your job isn't to pick every stock or time every trade (calling the plays). Your job is to be the General Manager of your portfolio. You set the vision, you determine the culture (risk tolerance), and then utilize professionals to help execute it.

When you stop trying to play every position on the field, your financial picture can clear up more quickly. Build the franchise. Let the system work.
