During the middle of tax season, Amy Watson and Sam Esser had the opportunity to step away from returns for a bit and spend time with the Missouri Tigers football team at the University of Missouri-Columbia talking through taxes, NIL income, and what it all means in the real world.

For many student athletes, this is the first time they’re dealing with complex income streams, multi-state filings, and planning decisions that can have long-term impact.

The biggest takeaway: don’t wait until tax time. Having a trusted advisor early makes a difference, especially when income isn’t straightforward. Planning ahead is what keeps opportunities from turning into problems.

We appreciate the team’s time, hospitality, and engagement. Great questions, thoughtful participation, and a group clearly taking this seriously.

We’re proud to announce that Caroline Bueler has recently completed the City of Columbia’s Civic Academy. The Civic Academy is an eight-session interactive program that offers in depth insight into how the City of Columbia, Missouri operates.
Over the eight sessions, participants explore nearly all aspects of city government, including utilities, public works, housing and community development, parks and recreation, public safety, finance, and more.

GKC specializes in accounting and auditing services for governmental entities and municipalities, and this represents a valuable opportunity for lifelong learning. Having a team member who has gained a firsthand, structured overview of municipal operations strengthens our ability to serve clients with both technical skill and a practical understanding of local government dynamics.

A little friendly competition never hurts, especially when it brings our team together.

The Gerding, Korte & Chitwood, P.C. West (Boonville) and East (Columbia) offices faced off in a friendly golf challenge. While there were plenty of great shots (and a few lost balls), what stood out most wasn’t the scorecard, it was the camaraderie.

At GKC, mentoring doesn’t always happen in a meeting room. Sometimes it’s a conversation between holes, or encouragement from a teammate trying something new. We believe growth happens in all kinds of spaces when people genuinely support each other.

Congratulations to GKC East, the reigning champions! We’re already looking forward to next year’s competition.

🌟 Intern Spotlight: Paige Striley 🌟

Paige connected with Gerding, Korte & Chitwood, P.C. through her professor and the Dean of Accountancy at University of Missouri Trulaske College of Business. She was looking for hands-on experience at a smaller accounting firm where she could make an impact—and GKC delivered.

As a Division I athlete, she appreciated the firm's flexibility and the mentorship she’s received, which has helped shape her early professional development.

During her internship, Paige has been assisting with audits. Through this work, she’s gained valuable insight into how audits are structured before fieldwork begins, and she looks forward to experiencing audit fieldwork firsthand to see how planning transitions into testing—bringing the entire audit process full circle.

One of her favorite parts of the internship has been forming new connections and learning from the GKC team. She’s especially grateful for the guidance she’s received from her mentor, Katie Carrier, and for the opportunity to build her foundation in audit and accounting beyond the classroom.

At Mizzou, Paige is a member of the University of Missouri Swim Team and is involved with Student Athletes Fostering Empowerment (SAFE).

🎤 Fun fact: Her dream concert is to see Old Dominion perform at Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

From classroom connections to real-world experience:

Emma first met our partner Amy Watson during a class project interview and stayed in touch. That connection opened the door to an internship at GKC, where she’s gaining hands-on experience and the support of a professional mentor to help guide her career path.

Emma has gained experience in both tax and audit, contributing to client work during the busy tax season and participating in audits over the summer months. She’s not only learning the technical side of tax and audit, but also gaining insight into what daily life looks like for a career CPA.

One of her favorite parts of the internship? Experiencing GKC’s team culture through collaboration during the workday and at firm events.

🎓 Emma is a member of Delta Sigma Pi professional fraternity, is a coach with Columbia Youth Football Cheerleading, is an assistant teacher at a local preschool, and studied abroad in Europe with the University of Missouri Trulaske College of Business. 🌍📘
