Ask the Advisor - Shari Carlson: How do you stay current with changes in finance and investing?

I read a wide variety of sources from economists to market research at Goldman Sachs, Schwab, Vanguard, and the BEA. I do a lot of fund comparisons and research on holdings also, and I stay connected with other advisors who share their insights.

That said, I’m very selective about what I take seriously. There’s a lot of financial news that doesn’t really change the big picture. I focus on bigger economic shifts and market trends, and I ask how they might actually affect the people I work with. If it does, we talk about whether and how to adjust. If it doesn’t, I usually address it through education. Learning/education, is a huge foundation of my company, always stay curious.

I also recognize that money is emotional, not just logical. Staying current isn’t just about the numbers, it’s about noticing how news lands with people too. I focus on the feelings behind financial decisions, helping people build trust in themselves and confidence in the choices they make.

We hear a lot of noise about the dollar losing value, inflation rising, the economy changing…
But what does that actually mean in real life?

It’s simpler than it sounds.

The value of the dollar is really about purchasing power: How much your money can buy you day to day?

Most people don’t feel currency charts or economic headlines.
They feel:
• Groceries costing more
• Rent and insurance creeping up
• Savings not going as far as they used to

Not something dramatic overnight… but a slow squeeze on everyday life.

Here’s the good news most headlines don’t talk about:
You don’t need to predict the economy to make smart financial decisions. You just need a plan that helps your money keep up with real life over time.

Because financial security isn’t about perfect timing… It’s about making sure future-you can still afford the life you’re working so hard to build today.

If you need help building, or securing what you've built, we're here to help.

Good money management is not about hustle or deprivation.

It is about intention, clarity, and long term thinking.
It is about making calm decisions instead of purely emotional ones.
It is about building a life where money supports you instead of stressing you.

Boring is beautiful when it comes to money. 😉

If you want a simple framework for managing your money, start here:

Income = What you earn.
Spending = Where it goes.
Saving = What you keep.
Investing = How you grow it.
Protection = How you safeguard it.

You do not need perfection.
You need a system that works for your real life.

Small, consistent decisions compound into real stability.

Let’s talk about being ready for financial curveballs.

Life has a way of surprising us: A job change, a medical bill, a car that suddenly decides it’s done cooperating. And when we’re not prepared, the first place people tend to look is their investments…

That’s the double-whammy we want you to avoid.

Often times, you’re not just pulling money out, you’re interrupting your long-term growth and locking in losses. That setback can ripple for years.

This is why your emergency fund matters so much.
Aim for at least 3 months of your fixed expenses (more if your income fluctuates). This gives you breathing room, protects your long-term strategy, and keeps your goals on track even when life gets messy.

Your investments are meant to grow.
Your emergency fund is meant to catch you when life happens.

If you’re not sure what your “3-month number” should be or how to build it without stress, we're happy to help you map it out. You don’t have to figure this out alone.

Personal finance is not about being rich.
It is about freedom, security, and choice.

It is about knowing where your money goes, having savings when life happens (Cause it always does), and building a future you do not have to panic about.

When you have a plan, money becomes a tool.
Without one, it can be a constant source of stress.

That is the difference.
