A common worry when gifting appreciated assets: What if the recipient doesn't know what to do with them?
It’s a fair question. Many adult children and grandchildren have never managed a concentrated stock position, dealt with carryover cost-basis rules, or considered the tax implications of a future sale.
But in many ways, that’s part of what makes the strategy valuable. The transfer itself naturally creates an opportunity for guidance.
The discussion usually extends beyond simply handing over the asset. It often becomes a conversation about what the investment is, how the embedded gain works, what the recipient’s options are, when selling might make sense, what the tax consequences could look like, and who they should consult before making decisions.
In that sense, beyond the transfer of the asset, the opportunity to educate can yield many long-term, helpful effects that might not have occurred otherwise. A true win/win.
