This year I am seeing more clients installing solar panels, and I feel the need to make this public service announcement:

Please check with your tax professional BEFORE investing in solar panels to confirm you will actually benefit from the tax credit. The solar sales people don’t always explain that the credit is NONREFUNDABLE! In other words, if you don’t owe any tax, you don’t benefit from this credit. It rolls forward to future years, but that may not be helpful to some taxpayers.

New solar tax credits can help you save money on the upfront costs of installing solar panels—around $7,500 on average.
