Received a letter from the IRS or another taxing agency? Don’t automatically assume the worst—and don’t ignore it.

Tax notices can be sent for many reasons, including a missing document, a difference between reported information, a payment issue, or a request for additional information.

If you receive a notice:

Keep the entire letter and envelope.
Read the requested action and deadline carefully.
Do not send information or payment until you understand what the notice is asking.
Keep copies of anything you submit.
Contact your tax professional if you are unsure how to respond.

If you pay independent contractors for your business, one small form can save a lot of frustration later: the W-9.

A completed W-9 gives you the information needed to properly prepare certain year-end tax forms, including the contractor’s legal name, business name, address, and taxpayer identification number.

Waiting until January to collect missing information can make 1099 preparation much harder than it needs to be.

A good business practice is to request a completed W-9 from a new contractor before or when work begins—not months later when you are trying to track them down.
