Do your financials not make sense to you? Maybe your tax preparer has told you something looks off. Sometimes all it takes is a second opinion.

When I was a kid, my mom and I did sudoku at the laundromat while the dryers ran.

I never got tired of it. There's something satisfying about a puzzle where every number has a place and the answer is already there if you keep looking.

That's still how I feel about a set of books. When the numbers are set up right, they tell you something: which jobs pay, where the cash goes, and what next month looks like. When they aren't, it's a pile of digits.

Before you quote your next job, ask yourself three things.

1. How many hours will this really take, including the drive, the supply house run, and the callback if something goes wrong?
2. What did the last job like this actually pay me after labor and materials, not what I quoted?
3. If I don't win it, am I okay with that?

The third one matters most. When you know what a job type really earns you, you can walk away from the ones that don't pay without feeling like you're losing work.

Here's something that's easy to admit only to yourself.

Out on a job, you know exactly what you're doing. You can diagnose a bad compressor before you roll the truck. In front of the financial report, you feel like you're guessing.
