Already taxed through payroll does not mean the stock-sale form can be ignored.

When employer stock is sold, the W-2 and Form 1099-B need to be reviewed together. A basis figure that does not account for compensation already taxed as wages can overstate the capital gain if the required adjustment is missed.

Keep the stock-plan statements and exercise or vesting records alongside the tax forms. Our article explains the reporting issue and why different types of equity compensation need different treatment.

A foreign account can require U.S. reporting even if it earns little or no income.

One common misconception is that each account must exceed $10,000 before the FBAR applies. The test generally looks at the combined value of reportable foreign accounts at any time during the year.

Old accounts, jointly held family accounts and accounts with signature authority can all deserve a closer look. Our article also explains why Form 8938 is a separate requirement and why reporting an account does not mean its balance is taxable income.

No shares sold does not necessarily mean no tax due.

When you exercise incentive stock options and keep the shares, the difference between the exercise price and the stock’s value may enter the alternative minimum tax calculation, even though you received no sale proceeds.

Before exercising, review both the purchase cost and the cash potentially needed for taxes. Our article explains why your household’s full income picture matters and why a later drop in the share price may not erase the exercise-date AMT exposure.

A trust is not reserved for families with generational wealth. It can help set instructions for managing a home, savings and other assets if a parent becomes incapacitated or dies.

The details matter: who will act as trustee, which assets the trust owns, and how beneficiaries will receive support. Signing a document does not automatically move assets into it, and retirement-account beneficiary choices deserve a separate tax review.

We explain how trusts work, when they may be useful, and the pitfalls families often overlook.

Your employer withheld shares for taxes when your RSUs vested. Why might you still owe at tax time?

Federal income-tax withholding at 22% can be lower than the rate that ultimately applies to the income. Salary, bonuses, your spouse’s income and multiple vesting dates all need to be considered together.

A useful review before year-end: compare your projected annual tax with what you expect to pay through withholding and estimated payments. Our article explains where an RSU shortfall can come from and why selling the shares does not erase the original compensation income.

Understanding RSU tax withholding is crucial—many employees face unexpected tax bills when vested shares reveal a higher tax burden.
