WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service has announced Monday, Jan. 27, 2025 as the official start date of the nation's 2025 tax season when the agency will begin accepting and processing 2024 individual tax returns.

Several factors can influence the timing of a refund after the IRS receives a tax return. While the IRS issues most refunds in less than 21 days, taxpayers are advised not to depend on receiving a 2024 federal tax refund by a specific date for major purchases or bill payments. Some returns may require additional review and take longer to process if there are possible errors, missing information, or indications of identity theft or fraud.

Additionally, under the PATH Act, the IRS cannot issue refunds for tax returns claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) before mid-February. The IRS must hold the entire refund—not just the portion associated with these credits—until the review is complete.

State programs, e-file, and forms are released as TaxSlayer Pro receives approval from each state. We are working diligently with state agencies to ensure approvals before January 27th, but the timing will vary by state.
TaxSlayer Pro expects prior year e-file (2023 and 2022 individual and state returns) to be available by January 29, 2025.
Business e-File for 2024, 2023 and 2022 is expected to be available on January 15, 2025.

WASHINGTON — El Servicio de Impuestos Internos anunció el lunes 29 de enero de 2024 como la fecha oficial de inicio de la temporada de impuestos de 2024 del país, cuando la agencia comenzará a aceptar y procesar las declaraciones de impuestos de 2023.

Muchos factores diferentes pueden afectar el momento de un reembolso después de que el IRS recibe una declaración. Aunque el IRS emite la mayoría de los reembolsos en menos de 21 días, advierte a los contribuyentes que no confíen en recibir un reembolso antes de una fecha determinada, especialmente al realizar compras importantes o pagar facturas. Algunas devoluciones pueden requerir una revisión adicional y pueden tardar más. La forma más sencilla de comprobar el estado de un reembolso es mediante ¿Dónde está mi reembolso? en IRS.gov o en la aplicación IRS2Go.

IRS Announces the Official Start of the 2024 Filing Season

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service has announced Monday, Jan. 29, 2024, as the official start date of the nation's 2024 tax season when the agency will begin accepting and processing 2023 tax returns.

Many different factors can affect the timing of a refund after the IRS receives a return. Although the IRS issues most refunds in less than 21 days, the IRS cautions taxpayers not to rely on receiving a refund by a certain date, especially when making major purchases or paying bills. Some returns may require additional review and may take longer. The easiest way to check a refund's status is by using Where's My Refund? on IRS.gov or the IRS2Go app.

Under the federal Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act, the IRS cannot issue Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) refunds before mid-February. Where's My Refund? should show an updated status by February 17 for most early EITC/ACTC filers.

The IRS expects most EITC/ACTC related refunds to be available in taxpayer bank accounts or on debit cards by February 27 if they chose direct deposit and there are no other issues with their tax return.
