The Internal Revenue Service and its Security Summit partners are cautioning taxpayers and tax professionals to beware of a new scam in which fraudsters are sending out cardboard envelopes from a delivery service asking people to send photos and bank account information so they can receive an unclaimed tax refund.

The envelope has a letter bearing the IRS masthead and claiming that the notice is "in relation to your unclaimed refund."

The letter includes contact information and a phone number that don't belong to the IRS, but it asks for sensitive personal information from taxpayers — including detailed pictures of driver's licenses — that can be used by identity thieves to try to get a tax refund and other sensitive financial information.

Yes, it is true that the Federal government has extended both the filing due date and the payment due date for income taxes until 7/15/2020. However, Missouri has not changed its due date(probably will). Because some of my staff have scheduled vacations, etc. after 4/15 and none of us want to be doing tax returns on July 4, we are requesting that you provide us with your income tax information as soon as possible. we will work to complete the returns ASAP and you can decide whether to pay now or by 7/15. refunds are supposedly not going to be held up, so filing earlier will get refunds earlier. Thank you for your cooperation.

The Internal Revenue Service is cautioning taxpayers and tax professionals to beware of a new twist on an old scam in which fraudsters call up victims and threaten to cancel their Social Security number if they don’t pay their taxes.

“In the latest twist on a scam related to Social Security numbers, scammers claim to be able to suspend or cancel the victim’s SSN,” said the IRS in an email to tax professionals Thursday. “It’s yet another attempt by con artists to frighten people into returning ‘robocall’ voicemails. Scammers may mention overdue taxes in addition to threatening to cancel the person’s SSN. If taxpayers receive a call threatening to suspend their SSN for an unpaid tax bill, they should just hang up. Make no mistake…it’s a scam.”

The IRS warned taxpayers not to provide sensitive personal or financial information over the phone unless they’re positive they know the caller is legitimate. When in doubt, they should hang up the phone.

This is a new scam that has just started.

The Security Summit, which is a partnership among the IRS, state tax authorities, tax software companies and tax preparation business, is warning taxpayers to beware of a new twist on the scam. In the past few weeks, the scammers have been impersonating the IRS, with their emails purporting to come from “IRS Online.” The phishing email comes with an attachment called “Tax Account Transcript” or a similar name. The subject line of the message uses some variation of the phrase “tax transcript.” However, the clues can change with different versions of the malware. Scores of the scam emails have been forwarded recently to the IRS’s clearinghouse for phishing emails, [email protected].

The IRS is once again reminding taxpayers it doesn’t send unsolicited emails to the public, nor would it email a sensitive document such as a transcript summarizing a tax return. The IRS is warning taxpayers not to open the email or the attachment. If they’re using a PC, they should delete the message or forward it to [email protected]. If they receive it on an employer’s computer, they should notify the organization’s own technology professionals

This is a new scam.

New Medicare cards are being mailed now to Missouri recipients. The new cards will not have Social Security Numbers. A new scam going around is telephone calls saying they are from Medicare and need to correct the cards and asking for your Social Security number. This is not the case. Do not provide that information. Pass this on.

In the near future, new Medicare cards will be issued and they will not have your Social Security number on them. A new scam is that people are contacting you and telling you it is a mistake and asking for your Social Security number. Be aware that this is a scam. The cards should not have your number on it.

A new tax scam is becoming prevalent, according to the IRS. The caller says they are from the IRS Technical Assistance center and has his phone programmed to reflect the local TAC center phone number. these guys are pretty good, but remember that the IRS never calls you out of the blue and demands money without proviously notifying you via mail. Feel free to call us if you have any questions and feel free to refer any "IRS" callers to us.
