📬 Important Tax Filing Update: New USPS Postmark Rules
If you mail tax returns, payments, or extensions, this is something you need to know.
As of December 24, 2025, the U.S. Postal Service clarified how postmark dates are determined. A postmark now reflects the date your mail is processed by USPS, not necessarily the date you dropped it in a mailbox.
👉 Why does this matter?
For tax filings, the IRS relies on the postmark date to determine whether something was filed on time. That means a return mailed on the deadline could still be considered late if it isn’t processed until the next day.
💡 How to protect yourself:
✔️ Mail time-sensitive tax documents early
✔️ Go inside the post office and request a hand-canceled postmark
✔️ Use Certified Mail or get a dated receipt
✔️ When possible, e-file to eliminate postmark risk entirely
📌 Bottom line: Mailing something on the deadline may no longer be enough. A little planning now can help you avoid penalties, interest, and unnecessary stress later.
