Your mortgage rate hasn’t changed… so why did your payment go up?Because your monthly payment is more than just principal and interest. On a fixed-rate mortgage, your principal and interest may stay the same, but property taxes and homeowners insurance can increase. If those costs are paid through escrow, those increases can show up directly in your monthly payment. And sometimes it can hit twice.
If your escrow account came up short last year, you may be paying back that shortage while also covering higher costs for the current year.
Two things to check:
1 Review your escrow statement and ask your lender to explain exactly what changed.
2 Check your PMI. It may not be the reason your payment increased, but if you qualify to remove it, that could help reduce your monthly payment.
Your mortgage rate may be locked in.
The cost of owning your home isn’t.
At Guardian Investment Advisors, we believe understanding where your money is going is an important part of building a stronger financial plan.
Save this for the next time your mortgage statement changes, and send it to someone who just got an escrow surprise.
Plan Today. Own Tomorrow.
