Forget dorm décor.
Here’s the REAL college checklist parents should consider before move in rolls around:
💬 Set the money boundaries early: Who's responsible for what? Tuitions, travel, hobbies... clarity now= = less stress later.
💸 Teach them to run a budget: A simple plan today helps them build financial confidence for tomorrow. Start the school year with a plan.
🎂 Turning 18 changes the rules overnight: Talk with your child about what medical and school information you need, and may no longer have automatic access to.
⚠️ “Free” isn’t always free: Credit card freebies often have long term consequences.
🛑 Protect their identity like it’s gold: College students are prime targets for scams. Awareness is everything. Stay alert, and informed.
🤝 Talk about transparency: Leaving for college comes with plenty of independence, and some kids need more support, and guidance than others. Chat about expectations around what you'll share (grades, finances, etc.) before it becomes an issue.
To the incoming college students and their parents- you've got this. Leaving for school, especially if moving out of your parent's home for the first time, might be a greater adjustment than academic work alone.
Feel prepared to tackle college life with confidence by having these conversations today.
