The Internal Revenue Service has announced Monday, Jan. 26, 2026 as the official start date of the nation's 2026 tax season when the agency will begin accepting and processing 2025 individual tax returns.

Several factors can influence the timing of a refund after the IRS receives a tax return. While the IRS issues most refunds in less than 21 days, taxpayers are advised not to depend on receiving a 2025 federal tax refund by a specific date for major purchases or bill payments. Some returns may require additional review and take longer to process if there are possible errors, missing information, or indications of identity theft or fraud. Also, returns including a request for a refund to be disbursed by paper check from the IRS may be delayed for up to an additional 6 weeks.

On April 17, 2025 the IRS further extended the filing deadlines for North Carolina taxpayers from May 1 to September 25, 2025. This extension applies to individuals and households that reside or have a business anywhere in North Carolina.

The deadline can be further extended to October 15, 2025 but the taxpayer would have to file Form 4868 in paper form to request it.

More time to file and pay

The IRS automatically gives taxpayers whose address of record is in a disaster-area locality more time to file returns and pay taxes. Taxpayers get the extra time without having to ask for it.

Currently, taxpayers in the entire states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina, and parts of Tennessee and Virginia, who received extensions to file their 2023 returns have until May 1, 2025, to file. Tax-year 2023 tax payments are not eligible for this extension. In addition, May 1 is also the deadline for filing 2024 returns and paying any tax due.
The IRS is offering relief to any area designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The current list of eligible localities is always available on the Tax relief in disaster situations page on IRS.gov.

WASHINGTON โ€” The Internal Revenue Service has announced Monday, Jan. 27, 2025 as the official start date of the nation's 2025 tax season when the agency will begin accepting and processing 2024 individual tax returns.

Several factors can influence the timing of a refund after the IRS receives a tax return. While the IRS issues most refunds in less than 21 days, taxpayers are advised not to depend on receiving a 2024 federal tax refund by a specific date for major purchases or bill payments. Some returns may require additional review and take longer to process if there are possible errors, missing information, or indications of identity theft or fraud.
Additionally, under the PATH Act, the IRS cannot issue refunds for tax returns claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) before mid-February. The IRS must hold the entire refundโ€”not just the portion associated with these creditsโ€”until the review is complete.

State programs, e-file, and forms are released as TaxSlayer Pro receives approval from each state.

Greetings! Hope everyoneโ€™s year is off to a good start! We just wanted to remind you of a few important dates that are coming up. If you have a business and file a separate business return outside of your regular tax return, the due date for those returns is March 15, 2024! The IRS is very strict about enforcing penalties on late business returns.

The deadline for all personal tax returns this year is April 15, 2024

You do not need an appointment to file until after April 15, 2024
